A favorite with American and European travelers,
Blue Waters Inn fits Tobago’s relaxed style while providing spacious,
comfortable accommodations for independent vacationers, small groups,
and families. Circling the shores of Batteaux Bay seems like the perfect
spot for a resort, and Blue Waters Inn has capitalized on their prime
location. At the East End, near the small villages of Speyside and Charlotteville,
this low-rise, 38-room resort soothes guests with rooms a few feet from
the sea, wonderful local and continental cuisine in the restaurant, and
good service.
A variety of rooms and prices make this resort work for almost everyone.
From simple standard rooms with one or two beds and a bath, to efficiencies
with complete kitchen facilities, to bungalows featuring one or two bedrooms
and kitchens, you can find just what you’re looking for in vacation
accommodations. The efficiencies and bungalows are very spacious with
lots of room to spread out, dining table, one, two, or more beds, and
chairs to sit and relax on your porch. Many units are air-conditioned;
all have ceiling fans and a great bay view. There is no swimming pool,
however the beach is just steps away, as is the restaurant and Shipwreck
bar which serves lunch and snacks. If you don’t want to cook at
all, meal plans are available.
Nature lovers seem to flock here again and again, making this prime spot
their headquarters for exploring all Tobago’s natural charms. With
easy access to Tobago’s protected Main Ridge forest reserve, Little
Tobago (Bird of Paradise Island), and the St. Giles Islands (the largest
seabird colony in the Southern Caribbean) touting over 400 species of
birds and 600 species of butterflies, eco-tourists come to Tobago to hike
in the rainforests where everything is covered in a carpet of soft green
vegetation with orchids and bromeliads growing from the trees. Frogs chirp,
waterfalls rush over jagged volcanic rocks, and birds and butterflies
are everywhere.
Below the sparkling blue Caribbean Sea, Tobago also boasts some of the
best diving in the Caribbean. Rich currents from the South American Orinoco
River feed the lush underwater landscape featuring huge brain coral, barrel
sponges, giant manta rays, large angelfish and green moray eels. This
aquarium aspect lures divers from all over the world to these waters for
the chance encounter with the Giant Manta (Manta-Birostris), or simply
the “Tobago Taxi”. The scuba diving facility, Aquamarine Dive
Ltd., received the status of a PADI IDC Gold Palm Resort/Training Facility
and is the only dive operation in Trinidad and Tobago to achieve this
5-star rating. It is also important to note its close proximity to the
island's only decompression chamber, which was recently installed to ensure
guests' safety.
The hotel can arrange for rental cars and jeeps, tours of the island,
glass-bottom boat rides, hiking, fishing, boating, sightseeing to nearby
islands for birdwatching and snorkeling, and rainforest adventures. Lighted
tennis courts, kayaks and windsurfers are available free for guests’
use, and the hammocks on the beach and lounge chairs always seemed to
be full of contented vacationers. There is an air-conditioned library
room with a TV for those who just have to keep up with what’s going
on back home. Baby-sitting service is available.
Breakfast and dinner in the Fishpot Restaurant feature typical American
and some European specialties. The food and service are good, with coffee,
tea, water, and juice available self-service. Ceiling fans cool the restaurant
that overlooks the beach, and the windows are usually open to let in the
sea breezes. Entertainment by local steel bands and entertainers is featured
at least once a week. Lunch and snacks are outside under the thatched-roof
of the Shipwreck Bar. Salads, sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and punch all
serve to sooth the hungry guests and visitors daily. Lively music and
drinks make happy hour a favorite every night before dinner.
If you’re looking for a casual, relaxing out of the way vacation
destination, Tobago is it. Blue Waters Inn is away from the main town
and tourist areas, close to the best dive sites, and offers everything
guests could want in the way of a tropical vacation.
